PED 142 - SWIMMING
II (1 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Refines basic swimming
skills and presents more advanced swimming strokes. Focuses on physical
conditioning and safety. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 1 hour. Total 2 hours
per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
The purpose of this
course is to review Swimming I, to improve basic swimming skills, and to
improve cardiovascular endurance.
ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Swimming I or previous
swimming experience.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of
this course the student will be able to:
A. demonstrate basic
swimming skills and strokes.
B. demonstrate rescue
breathing.
C. understand the
principles of swimming, diving and safety skills.
D. demonstrate endurance
in swimming various strokes.
E. demonstrate advanced
swimming skills.
F. demonstrate basic
rescue techniques.
G. become familiar
with CPR.
MAJOR ELEMENTS OF CONTENT
A. Front crawl back
crawl breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly
B. Endurance in swimming
basic strokes
C. Turns, treading
water, floating, and diving.
D. Personal safety
and rescue techniques including rescue breathing, CPR, recognition of spinal
injury and throwing rescues
