HRI 255 – HUMAN
RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING
FOR HOSPITALITY
AND TOURISM (3 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prepares the students
for interviewing, training, and developing employees. Covers management
skills (technical, human, and conceptual) and leadership. Covers the establishment
and use of effective training, and performance evaluating measures to improve
productivity. Emphasizes staff and customer relations. Lecture 3 hours
per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
The purpose of this
course is to study the basic functions of the human resource manager in
hospitality and travel organizations. In additional to appraising the terminology
of the field, the course focuses on human resource management practices,
which build strong, competitive organizations. The students at any level
of hospitality management may take this course. It is a one semester, three-credit
course. It is required of all students pursuing an Associate in Applied
Science Degree or Certificate in Hospitality Management or an Association
in Applied Science Degree in Travel and Tourism, or Dietetic Technology.

Upon completion of
this course, the student should be able to:

introduce the field of
human resource management by having the student understand historical developments,
and some contemporary practices applicable to the hospitality industry

cite problems commonly
found in the labor-intensive hospitality field, evaluate methods of solving
these problems, and appraise the impact of legislation and collective bargaining
on management practices

familiarize self with
task analysis, job analysis, job descriptions, and performance assessment
tools used in the hospitality field, and to recognize their relationship
to training and service standards

develop and appraise training
programs used to achieve organizational objectives in hospitality and travel
business
-
explore benefits unique
to our industry, in order to use for retention activities

discover through research
the hospitality and travel industry’s current Human Resource Management
practices

become familiar with the
labor market and hospitality recruitment and with laws related to recruitment
and hiring

know how to prepare a
resume and present themselves to potential employers

identify common Human
Resource problems in the Hospitality, Travel industry, and discuss solutions

recognize theories of
motivation and various leadership styles
