HIT 232 - HEALTH RECORD APPLICATIONS II (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Uses an integrated approach to practicing health records skills in a simulated clinical environment. Emphasizes the use of the microcomputer in accomplishing problem solving tasks. Laboratory 6 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of this course is to prepare the student to perform the following health data collection functions:

    1. Data entry and retrieval routines
    2. Computer ratios used in computer health care delivery
    3. Prepare statistical charts using a graphics software product
    4. Abstract and code health care data
ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

COURSE OBJECTIVES

    1. Code diagnoses and operations using ICD 9 CM.
    2. Abstract pertinent health data from patients' records according to a prescribed procedure.
    3. Input abstracted data and codes into a DBMS.
    4. Given selected requests for health data, utilize a DBMS to provide reports.
    5. Perform descriptive statistical routines.
    6. Perform assignments related to the cancer registry.
    7. Complete one pattern analysis problem.
    8. Review 3 cases for admission/concurrent review following established procedures.
    9. Complete 2 quality assurance studies
    10. Compute PPS information following prescribed procedures.
