ESL 12 - ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: COMPOSITION II (5 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Provides further instruction and practice in the writing process, emphasizing writing summaries and short essays and introducing advanced language patterns. Includes practice in developing and improving writing strategies. Lecture 5 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

To give high-intermediate ESL students an opportunity to practice and refine writing skills in the context of the short essay with a focus on increasing fluency and accuracy, thus preparing students for a variety of academic courses.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Requires a sense of paragraph structure and development, appropriate use of verb forms, and command of basic sentence structures with some coordination and subordination, as indicated by a placement test and writing sample, or teacher recommendation from a previous level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

GOAL 1 - Students will be able to produce multi-paragraph essays.

Objectives

Given a topic, students will be able to:

    1. generate ideas about a topic
    2. focus on the topic
    3. write an outline for the proposes essay in response to that topic
    4. write a draft of the essay from the outline
    5. revise and edit the draft
GOAL 2 - Students will be able to use advanced language patterns in their writing

Objectives

After gathering ideas about a topic, students will be able to:

    1. connect ideas through coordination, subordination, or embedding
    2. use punctuation appropriate to each language pattern
GOAL 3 - Students will be able to write with increasing accuracy and fluency.

Given a topic, students will be able to:

    1. use varied vocabulary to express complex ideas
    2. write using coherent sentences
    3. incorporate idiomatic language in their writing
    4. write using native speaker thought patterns
