DNH 230 - OFFICE PRACTICE AND ETHICS (1 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Studies the principles of dental ethics and economics as they relate to the dental hygienist. The course also includes a study of jurisprudence and office procedures. Lecture 1 hour.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The principles of ethics and jurisprudence: the philosophy, development of current trends in dental auxiliary education and practice, and professional development as it relates to the role of organized dentistry, continuing education and the analysis of contemporary issues in the literature.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Successful completion of four semesters of the dental hygiene program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. define professional ethics and jurisprudence and apply these concepts to the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene
    2. enumerate the professional responsibilities of health care provider in maintaining the highest quality health care for the public
    3. define the role of Dental Examining Boards and Dental Practice Acts in the regulation of the practice of dentistry
    4. correctly interpret and follow the Rules and Regulations of the current Virginia Dental Laws
    5. discuss manpower credentialing with respect to licensing, reciprocity, and preceptor training
    6. identify and demonstrate an understanding of the contemporary issues facing modern dentistry
    7. describe the role of the consumer in planning, evaluating, and regulating dental health care delivery
    8. outline the possible roles for dental auxiliaries in the event of national health insurance
    9. discuss the impact of organized dentistry on the current and future directions of dental health care delivery
    10. demonstrate an understanding of the structure, functions, policy services and impact of organized dental hygiene at the national, constituent, and component levels
    11. list alternative practice opportunities available to the dental hygienist in addition to private office practice
