ART 243-244 - WATERCOLOR I-II (4 CR.) (4 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Presents abstract and representational painting in watercolor with emphasis on design, color, composition, technique and value. Lecture 2 hours. Studio instruction 4 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

ART 243 - WATERCOLOR I

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

To introduce the student to the materials, processes, and techniques of watercolor. The course is one of the second year electives in the Fine Arts transfer and AA degree program.

ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCIES

The prerequisite for this course is ART 131 - "Fundamentals of Design I". The student must have knowledge of basic 2D design skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will be able to produce images with an understanding of color, design, and use of watercolor media.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED

    1. Use of various papers and brushes
    2. Use of various wash techniques
    3. Use of various resist and knife techniques
    4. Mixing and painting with various watercolor media
ART 244 - WATERCOLOR II

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

To allow the student to develop his/her skills in watercolor, with more emphasis on composition and stylistic development. The course is one of the second year electives in the Fine Arts transfer and AA degree program.

ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCIES

The prerequisite for this course is ART 243 - "Watercolor I". The student must have basic watercolor skills and techniques.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will continue to develop increasing skill in watercolor and work towards personal stylistic direction.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED

    1. Use of various experimental watercolor techniques
    2. Development of more compositional stylistic images
    3. Compilation of a portfolio of water colors

    1. Historical developments of watercolor
    2. Mixed media techniques including watercolor
