TRV 136 - TOUR GUIDING AND MANAGEMENT (3 CR.)

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Focuses on the aspects and skills involved in tour guiding and tour management. Covers the components of a tour, trends, and the approaches to public speaking, cultural sensitivity, working with various age groups, and with the physically challenged. Lecture 3 hrs. per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course is designed to introduce the guiding and tour management profession and to provide practical instruction in the skills needed to obtain and thrive in these positions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME

  1. To introduce the guiding and tour managing professions.
  2. To identify the responsibilities of tour guides and tour managers.
  3. To analyze the philosophy of interpretation.
  4. To identify characteristics prevalent in the American culture and other cultures.
  5. To identify characteristics and needs of travelers in various age groups.
  6. To review the planning involved prior to managing a tour.
  7. To identify the resources available in tour planning.
  8. To develop better communication and presentation skills.
  9. To analyze the qualities of effective presentations.
  10. To identify various disabilities and develop methods for working with them.
  11. To inventory career possibilities and choose an appropriate path.
  12. To develop a simulated tour.
