INT 141 - TRANSLITERATING I (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Studies the skills required to transmit English into a manual code for English and vice versa. Introduces a variety of manual codes and their relationship to American Sign Language. Lecture 3 hours per week.

ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCY

Prerequisites ASL 201.

COURSE PURPOSE

Proficiency in transliterating is especially useful in the educational system K - 12, where various MCEs are used. Interpreters in this setting need to be knowledgeable of their role with various age groups. This course provides fundamental skills necessary for the transliterating part of state qualification and national exams.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the differences between transliteration and interpreting
  2. Understand the role transliterating plays in the educational system for deaf students
  3. Give examples of how Manual Codes for English (MCEs) are different than ASL.
  4. Produce all the signed morphological endings of English
  5. Produce initialized signs of the MCEs
  6. Know the rules of various MCEs
  7. Accurately transliterate a message of approximately ten minutes in length.
  8. Appropriately provide feedback to team interpreters
