EGR  245 - ENGINEERING MECHANICS DYNAMICS (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Presents approach to kinematics of particles in linear and curvilinear motion. Includes kinematics of rigid bodies in plane motion. Teaches Newton’s second law, work-energy and power, impulse and momentum, and problem solving using computers. Lecture 3 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The course will give the student skills in analysis of particles of mass and rigid bodies moving in linear and curved paths under the influence of various forces and undergoing. different types of acceleration. This is the second and last course offered in classical (Newtonian) mechanics, following EGR 140: Statics. It forms the foundation for later studies in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, antenna design, vibration analysis, electro-acoustics and other engineering fields.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Competence in vector calculus and statics. Prerequisites are MTH 277 and EGR 140.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To impart to the student the notions of vector kinematics for-particles of mass and rigid bodies; introduce him/her to the idea of dynamic equilibrium; make her/him capable of carrying out sophisticated calculations of kinetics involving motion of particles and rigid bodies under various external vector forces using Newton’s second law, the methods of work-energy and impulse-momentum.

    1. Kinematics of particles of mass in three dimensions.
    2. Kinetics of particles.
    3. Space mechanics (planar motion of particles of mass).
    4. Kinematics of rigid bodies (planar motion).
    5. Kinetics of rigid bodies.
    6. Conservation of energy (conservative force systems).
    7. Conservation of linear and angular momenta; central forces.
    8. Impact.
EXTRA TOPICS (optional)
    1. Virtual work.
    2. Vibration of simple oscillators and rigid bodies: undamped, damped, unforced and forced.
    3. Rotating frames; Coriolis acceleration.
