CHD 109 - MOVEMENT
AND MUSIC EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN (3 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Emphasizes theory and
practice in movement and music education and the integration of these skills
in a curriculum. Designed for teachers and aides in child care, preschool,
nursery, or primary schools. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total
4 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
The purpose of this
course is to:
A. develop an understanding
of theories of movement and music education in young children
B. provide the opportunity
for the student to practice methods and techniques of using movement and
music activities with young children
ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Functional literacy
in the English language; reading at the 12th grade level.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion
of this course, the student should be able to:
A. demonstrate an
understanding of how all areas of child development are enhanced through
movement and music activities
B. demonstrate competence
in preparing and leading movement and music activities for young children
C. demonstrate an
ability to integrate music and movement activities in the total program
curriculum, in programs for young children

A. An overview of
development - physical, cognitive, social and emotional - as it pertains
to movement and music
B. Concepts of children's
levels of participation in group activities and games
C. Use of materials
and simple instruments in a music and movement program
D. Issues of competition
and cooperation in group activities
E. Involvement of
children in the creative process of generating music and movement activities
F. Review and evaluation
of outside resources for music and movement activities
G. Production of teacher
generated original materials for use in classroom situations with children
