ARA 101-102 - BEGINNING ARABIC I-II (5 CR.) (5 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic Arabic sentence structure. Discusses the diversity of cultures in the Arab world. Lecture 5 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course is designed to introduce students to beginning communications skills in Arabic and to the varied cultures of the Arab world. It is intended to be useful to students of Arab descent as well as to meet the foreign language requirement of any degree.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Students must be functionally fluent in English. ARA 101 or its equivalent is a prerequisite for ARA 102.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of these courses, the student will be able to:

    1. understand simple spoken Arabic within the limited context presented to beginners
    2. speak simple Arabic with correct pronunciation at normal conversational speed
    3. read the Arabic he/she has already learned to comprehend and speak, reading selections in rearrangements and combinations of words and expressions already encountered
    4. write accurately what the student has learned to understand, say, and read
    5. list different Arab cultures
