Sexual
Assault
If a sexual assault does occur, you
should:
- Get to a safe place as soon as possible.
- Call the campus police if the
incident occurred on campus; the local police if
it occurred
off-campus. College faculty and staff members can
also assist you
in reporting an incident.
- Try to preserve all physical evidence.
Do not bathe, use the toilet, or change clothes.
If you do change clothes, place the clothing you
were wearing
in a paper, not plastic, bag.
- Get medical attention as soon as
you can. A medical exam will provide the opportunity
to help collect evidence in case you wish to take
legal action, and will include lab tests for sexually
transmitted
diseases and pregnancy.
- Contact someone to stay with you
and support you.
- Tell someone the details about the
assault. Write down everything you remember about
the assault as soon as possible.
College disciplinary procedures,
and civil suit are options available to victims of
sexual assault, and are initiated through the office
of the Dean of Students. In addition, the
victim's academic situation may be changed, if requested,
and if accommodations are reasonably available. During
college disciplinary procedures, both the accuser and
accused are entitled to have support present in the
form of an attorney, counselor, or adviser. The outcome
of any college disciplinary proceeding will be made
known to both the accuser and the accused. Sanctions
for sexual assault may range up to and including suspension
or expulsion from the college, and prosecution under
state laws. Criminal prosecution for sexual assault
is initiated by contacting the Campus Police. |
