Associate of Applied Science Degree
NOVA developed an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Cybersecurity to meet the critical need for cybersecurity professionals. The degree serves the widely differing demographics of students interested pursing a cybersecurity career, from career transitioners with degrees in other disciplines to new students just beginning their pursuit of an academic degree.
The main purpose of the degree is to prepare students for careers as cybersecurity technicians or analysts, by providing them with the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities identified in the National Initiative on Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Workforce Framework 2.0 and the National Security Agency/Department of Homeland Security criteria for Centers of Academic Excellence (CAEs) so they can find employment in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region.
It is an "applied" degree that transfers to more than four regional institutions, including George Mason University's Bachelor's of Applied Science in Cybersecurity, The George Washington University College of Professional Studies BS in Integrated Information Science, and Technology, Marymount University BS Information Technology, and UMUC's BS in Computer Networks and Security degree. More transfer agreements are in the process of being identified.
Students who want to transfer the AAS Cybersecurity degree to four-year institutions need to confirm individual institutional requirements with the institution into which they are transferring. This page provides transfer information as a guide to some of the institution's requirements, however is subject to change by that institution without notice.
The program provides students with opportunities to participate in a number of cybersecurity competitions, SFS Scholarship opportunities, student associations, internships and other experiential opportunities.
