First Year Experience
What is FYE?
The First Year Experience (FYE) is a program designed to provide academic, career and social support to NOVA freshmen. The program includes Learning Communities and a FYE Student Interest Group.
FYE Learning Communities
During the fall and spring semester first year students can enroll in linked courses that are designed to ensure their success. These courses are either taught by a team of instructors in the same classroom or are paired with another FYE course such as SDV 100. In either instance faculty and staff work to ensure the textbook, lecture topics, classroom assignments and homework are connected to enhance student success.
FYE SDV 100
The FYE SDV 100 course is designed to assists first year students with making a successful transition to college. Skills of self-management and self-responsibility that relate to being a successful student are presented. The course provides information about NOVA and community resources, the college’s policies and procedures, and the processes of moving effectively through the educational system. This course is strongly recommended for beginning students before enrolling for their 16th semester hour at the college.
FYE Student Interest Group
This club is created especially for first year students. The goal is to provide social activities and peer support for new students. Visit the Student Activities office (WC Room 158) or the Student Services Center (WC 202) for additional information on meeting dates and times.
FYE Social Networking
Creating meaningful relationships and a sense of community are two goals of the FYE Social Networking initiative. Throughout the semester activities are sponsored to provide opportunities for first year students to meet one another as well as faculty and staff. This information is initially provided during New Student Orientation, and is advertised on campus. Activities such as the Chat-n-Chew and Warm Welcome Back are open to all.
Why FYE?
Studies show that students who engage faculty and staff early in their educational career have a greater success rate than those who do not. The FYE program ensures that students get to know as soon as they arrive to campus. Further the program provides additional support and a social network to help students to meet their educational goals.
