Disability Support Service (DSS)
NOVA serves a large population of students who receive disability-related accommodations. Among those students are individuals attending classes on-campus as well as online, students actively involved in campus organizations and leadership positions, community activities and job responsibilities.
NOVA is committed to insuring all students have an opportunity to pursue a college education regardless of the presence or absence of a disability. NOVA will make reasonable accommodations in providing course, program and building modification, and/or auxiliary aids and services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008. No academically qualified student with a disability shall be denied access to or participation in the services, programs and activities of the College.
How to Begin
Step 1. Review information available on this website.
Step 2. Complete the Intake Packet and secure appropriate documentation.
Step 3. Contact a Disability Services Counselor to request an appointment. Deaf or hard of hearing students should contact NOVA’s Interpreter Services Office.
Step 4. Meet with Disability Services Counselor. If you are approved for accommodations, the counselor will provide you with an official Memorandum of Accommodation (MOA).
Step 5. Provide your MOA to the instructor of each class in which you wish to utilize any of your approved accommodations. You may also need to provide a copy of your MOA to the NOVA Testing Center if you will be utilizing any testing accommodations.
Intake Process
It is the responsibility of the student to obtain additional information or testing if it is required to determine eligibility for accommodations. NOVA does not provide testing/formal assessment of disabilities or reimburse students who complete testing through a community provider. A list of community testing providers is available through the campus Counseling Centers. NOVA will accept evaluations from all qualified professionals and do not specifically endorse the providers listed on the referral list.
Students who provide documentation, but do not complete the intake process, are not eligible to receive accommodations. In such cases, a Disabilities Services Counselor will make a reasonable effort to contact the student. If the student does not respond within 30 days or chooses not to complete the intake process, the student’s disability documentation will not be retained.
All information obtained in diagnostic and medical reports will be maintained and used in accordance with applicable confidentiality requirements. College policy reclassifies any student not enrolled for three full years as inactive. Records of inactive students will not be retained.
During the intake process a NOVA Disability Services Counselor will review your documentation and discuss your need for accommodations. The final determination of appropriate accommodations rests with a NOVA Disabilities Services Counselor. Students have the right to appeal this determination; see “Student Complaint and Grievance Policy” in the NOVA Student Handbook.
Handicapped parking spaces are available on each NOVA campus. Please contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a permit.
