Transfer Credit Evaluation

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Transferring credits to NOVA allows previous academic study, examination, or career experience to be evaluated for possible college credits. Only students who have declared a major and registered for at least one credit at NOVA may request evaluation of transfer credits or credit for prior learning. NOVA accepts credits for which a student has earned a grade of "C" or better. NOVA's Catalog and Credit for Prior Learning website outline in detail the college policy on accepting transfer credits for other institutions.

Evaluation Process

To have your previous work evaluated, NOVA students must:

Important:

  • NOVA’s evaluation process can take up to three weeks. Upon completion, you will be contacted only through your VCCS email address.
  • NOVA does not accept faxed transcripts.
  • Students are responsible for submitting all required documents to a Campus Student Services Center.
Guidelines
  • All official transcripts must be submitted to NOVA unopened, and in the original sealed envelope.
  • NOVA will only evaluate transcripts for a student's declared major.
  • Students must submit a separate request for re-evaluation of a new declared major.
  • Transfer grades that appear as a "T" do not impact a student's GPA.
  • General education courses from a college other than NOVA may not appear on your transcript or advising report, unless the course is for a specific program.
  • If you want to credit transferred from another VCCS College, you need to submit this form. You do not need to request a transcript.

The College Records Office (CRO) is responsible for evaluating:

  • Transcripts from colleges and universities within the United States.
  • Non-traditional credits including: AP, ABLE, ACE, CLEP, CAMBRIDGE, DSST, IB, SAT II and additional test scores.
  • College-level credit from colleges and universities outside of the United States.

Your transcript evaluation request will not be processed if you have not:

  • Enrolled in at least one credit course at NOVA.
  • Submitted an official transcript/test score.
  • Submitted a separate request for each transcript/test score.
  • Placed into ENG 111 via Accuplacer, the Virginia Placement Test, or another approved examination as listed in the current Catalog.
International Transcripts
  • Request evaluation of international coursework as early as possible. The process can take a considerable amount of time to complete.
  • Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an International Evaluation Service. Have an official copy of the evaluation sent to NOVA; you do not need to send the original transcript. NOVA only accepts evaluations from World Education Services or International Education Research Foundation.
  • The College Records Office or Academic division may ask you to provide additional information to determine a direct equivalent at NOVA.
