MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY


Associate in Applied Science Degree

Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare the students for certification and employment as medical laboratory technicians in hospital laboratories, private laboratories, physicians' office laboratories, health department laboratories, and industrial medical laboratories. Upon completion of the program graduates will be eligible to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry and other national certification exams.

Students must comply with all General Requirements for Health Technologies as specified in Section I.

Admission Requirements:

1. Attendance at Phlebotomy Information Session. (This satisfies the "Interview with Program Head" requirement.)

2. NVCC application on file with Annandale as home campus.

3. Satisfactory scores on the NVCC placement/assessment tests: ENG III, Math 126 placement.

4. Qualifies for or has completed ENG III.

5. Evidence of high school graduation, a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or college degree.

6. Two high school math courses or equivalent with 'C' or better.

7. One high school biology course with lab or its equivalent (BIO 101) with 'C' or better.

8. One high school chemistry course or its equivalent (CHM 001) with 'C' or better.

Special Accreditation Status: The program is accredited the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Total minimum credits for the Medical Laboratory Technology major (A.A.S. degree) = 72.

(1) The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 207, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.

(2) Social science courses may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
