Student Services -- Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program

The Virginia War Orphan Education Program Legislation was renamed in 2006 the Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program, expanding eligibility for educational benefits to spouses.  Under the new legislation a child between the ages of 16 and 29, or spouse of a military service member killed, missing in action, taken prisoner, or at least 90 percent disabled may be eligible for education benefits. These benefits may include full payment of tuition, fees, room and board, and books at any state-supported college or university in Virginia. The veteran must have been a Virginia citizen at the time he or she entered the military or must have been a Virginia citizen for at least five years prior to the surviving dependent’s application for admission. The application may be downloaded at: www.dvs.virginia.gov/downloads/benefits_VMSDEAPPLICATION.pdf, or by contacting the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs, 270 Franklin Road, S.W., Room 810, Roanoke, Virginia, 24011-2215. The telephone number is 540-597-1730.
