Purpose: This curriculum is designed to prepare personnel to perform skilled duties and to assist the pharmacist-in-charge. Some examples of these duties include reading and interpreting written prescriptions and physicians' orders, computer information entry, preparation of prescription labels, and filling prescriptions and affixing labels for checking by the pharmacist. Other duties include ordering pharmaceuticals and supplies, customer assistance, cash register operation, answering telephones, and use of other routine equipment such as computer-assisted medication dispensing machines, computer-assisted intravenous (IV) preparations and electronic tablet/capsule counting machines in the retail, institutional, or hospital pharmacy. An understanding of state and federal pharmacy and drug laws is required. The curriculum includes learning experiences in class and in the laboratory, as well as in clinical, retail, institutional, and hospital pharmacies.
Special Accreditation Status: The Pharmacy Technician Program is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.
Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements for Health Technology Programs. (See page 101.)

Total credits for the Pharmacy Technician Career Studies Certificate = 28.
All first-time students must take a one-credit Student Development (STD) course prior to enrolling in their 16th credit at NVCC.
1 Persons holding current Health Care Provider CPR certification will have this requirement waived.
2 This course is offered in the second 8-weeks of the first semester and requires satisfactory progress in HLT 263.
3 Persons with at least one year full-time experience in pharmacy dispensing/assisting may apply to the program head to waive the clinical experience requirement.
