Transfer Information: NVCC has formal articulation agreements for transfer to the B.S.N. in Nursing at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET and Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA.

Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements for Health Technology Programs. (See page 101.)

Additional Admission Requirements:

1. Attend a Nursing information session.

2. Meet prerequisites for admission to Nursing.

a. Hold a high school diploma or GED.

b. Have completed one unit of high school level algebra and two units of science (1 unit of biology and 1 unit of chemistry) with a grade of C or better.

c. Qualify for ENG 111 and MTH 126 through acceptable scores on college placement tests.

3. Take the National League of Nursing (NLN) Pre-Admission Examination and achieve scores at the 50th percentile in verbal abilities, mathematics, and science on the NLN Pre-Admission Examination. Remedial assistance is available through courses and/or the learning resource center for students who do not achieve acceptable scores. Students may retake the exam until the required scores are obtained.

4. Submit a completed portfolio to the Nursing office within the specified mail-in period. Portfolios postmarked before or after the mail-in period will not be accepted. Students will be accepted into the program in the order received based on the date of receipt of the completed portfolio. Students not accepted into the program must re-submit a complete portfolio for the following year.

5. Take Basic First Aid course prior to registering for a NUR course.

6. Have Healthcare Provider CPR prior to registering for a NUR course.

Special Program Continuation Requirements:

1. Students must pass required NAS 161-162 courses with a C grade or higher.

2. All of the following courses must be completed by the end of the first academic year: ENG 111, HLT 141, MDL 108, NAS 161-162, PSY 201-202, and STD elective. Students will not be admitted to NUR 205 until those courses have been completed.

Licensure Requirements: The Virginia State Board of Nursing reserves the right to deny licensure to any candidate who has been convicted of a crime or any offense relating to the abuse of alcohol and/or use or sale of controlled substances in Virginia or any other state. Any applicant to the Nursing program who has been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony must consult with the program head prior to placement into the Nursing program.

Re-Admission: Students who leave the Nursing program and wish to be re-admitted must meet the requirements for initial admission into the program. Any developmental studies that were prescribed at the time the student left the program must have been satisfactorily completed. Students wishing to be re-admitted to the NVCC Nursing program will be required to satisfactorily complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment, 1 credit.

Transfer and Advanced Placement: Nursing credits earned at other institutions are reviewed by the program head to determine if the courses in question apply to the curriculum and/or if substitutions may be made within the curriculum. Students who transfer to NVCC with prior nursing courses will be required to satisfactorily complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment, 1 credit.

Advanced placement is available for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) wishing to enter the Nursing program with advanced standing. See the program head for details.

LPN to RN Transition Program: The sequence of three transition courses are designed to acknowledge the previously acquired skills of the LPN and begin the development of professional nursing skills. Upon successful completion of the transition courses: NUR 115, LPN to RN Transition (3 cr.); NUR 116, Select Nursing Concepts (1 cr.); and NUR 150 Community-Based Nursing in a Multi-Cultural Environment (3 cr.); the LPN is awarded advanced placement standing into the second year class. Transition courses are offered in the spring semester of the academic year.

The interested applicant should attend a Nursing Information Session and apply to the College. The LPN must meet all prerequisite and co-requisite requirements as do the generic nursing students to fulfill the A.A.S. degree requirements. The LPN is exempt from taking the NLN entrance exam, nor does s/he need to have high school Biology, as a prerequisite.

To graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as described in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs of this catalog. Students in this program may take HIT 130 – Intro. to Healthcare Information Systems or take the NVCC computer competency test. 1Students who have taken MDL 108 and NAS 150 will be allowed to substitute these courses for NAS 161 and 162 until Fall 2004. Students who enter the Nursing Program beginning Fall 2004 will be required to have NAS 161-162. 2 The humanities/fine arts elective may be selected from the list on page 38. Elective should be selected with the advice of a counselor or faculty advisor to meet requirements of the transfer institution.
