Transfer Information: NVCC has a formal articulation agreement for transfer to the B.S. in Health Sciences-Health Care Management at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET.

Prerequisites:

1. Attend a mandatory EMT Program information session provided monthly.

2. Hold, at a minimum, a high school or general equivalency diploma.

3. Hold a current certification as an EMT/Basic, either Virginia or National. The EMT-Basic or higher certification must be held current throughout the students’ tenure in the NVCC EMT Program.

4. Be proficient in reading, writing and speaking the English language.

5. Attain satisfactory scores on the NVCC assessment test to qualify students for English 111 and Math 120. Successfully complete NVCC computer competency requirements.

6. Have a NVCC application on file.

7. Be 18 years of age or older.

8. Attained a 2.0 GPA at last school attended.

9. Have no physical or mental impairment that would render you unable to perform any practical skills required for Advanced Life Support EMS training. Students must have an annual physical examination, providing proof of immunity from multiple communicable diseases. Please see Program Office for physical forms.

10. Hold a current certification in an approved course of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

11. A criminal record may prevent an applicant from becoming an EMT at any level. A Criminal History must be provided, at the students’ expense, and resubmitted annually throughout the students’ tenure in the NVCC EMT Program.

Have completed or be currently enrolled in NAS 150, Human Biology or the first course in the BIO 141/142 or NAS 161/162, Anatomy and Physiology sequence or equivalent, with a C or better.

Students must procure and maintain their own Personal Liability Insurance, with a minimum of $6000 coverage. Proof of insurance must remain with the student at all times, while on campus and clinical properties.

Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements for Health Technology Programs. (See page 101.)

Special Program Completion Requirements:

1. Students who receive an "I" (incomplete) grade in any of the courses in the EMT sequence must resolve the Incomplete before continuing in the EMT sequence.

2. Students must receive a grade of C or higher in core EMT courses in order to be eligible for the National Registry certifying examinations.

3. All clinical requirements must be met prior to taking any Virginia and/or National Registry certifying examination(s).

Re-Enrollment:

Students must follow the re-enrollment requirements for all Health Technology students.

Special Accreditation Status: The program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

To graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as described in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs of this catalog. 1 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).

² Students in this program may take HIT 130 – Intro. to Healthcare Information Systems or take the NVCC computer competency test.

3The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 220, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.
