Instructional Programs

Purpose: This curriculum is designed to prepare persons for employment in the electronics industry. In addition, the student who completes the program may choose to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor's degree in Electronics Technology. Occupational objectives include electronics technician, computer technician, telecommunications technician, radio and television technician, metrology technician, research and development technician, and industrial control technician.
Transfer Information: NVCC has formal articulation agreements for transfer to the B.S. in Engineering Technology-Electrical Engineering Technology and the B.S. in Computer Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET and Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA, as well as the B.S. in Vocational Industrial Education at Virginia Tech.
Recommended Preparation: Successful completion of high school algebra and geometry.

Total credits for the A.A.S. Degree in Computer and Electronics Technology =66.
To graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as described in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs of this catalog.
1 The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.
2 MTH 173 or MTH 271 may be substituted for MTH 213.
3 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
4 The SPD elective may be selected from the following: SPD 100, 110, 115, 126, and 229.
5 Humanities/fine arts elective may be chosen from list on page 38.
