The Extended Learning Institute (ELI) provides courses for those who cannot or prefer not to attend classes on campus. Instruction for ELI courses uses television, CD-ROM, World Wide Web, audio and video cassette tapes, and printed materials designed especially for independent study.
Most ELI courses are self-paced, but you have faculty and campus support when you need it. Faculty provide valuable assistance by telephone, e-mail, office visits, or through the mail. In many ELI courses, you interact with the instructor and other students via e-mail, voice mail, or the World Wide Web. The campuses provide student services. Exams are taken on campus in the Testing Center; in limited situations an approved proctor may administer exams.
You may register by mail and begin most ELI courses at any time. You can also register at any of the five NVCC campuses, or you may register by telephone through NOVAnet. You must designate a campus for your College records and for some College services. Students who want to begin televised courses before or after they are broadcast on cable TV may either rent tapes or view them in a campus Learning Laboratory or Library. Advising for ELI courses is available with the ELI counselor.
If you are a veteran and enroll in an ELI course, you will not be certified for benefits until you satisfactorily complete the course.
The Extended Learning Institute has no classrooms or testing centers. ELI offices are located at 8000 Forbes Place, off Port Royal Road, behind the Ravensworth Shopping Center in Springfield.
