NVCC offers transfer programs that lead to the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree or the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. These programs are designed for students who plan to complete the freshman and sophomore years of college work at the community college and then transfer to a four-year college or university to complete the junior and senior years of a bachelor’s degree. Since admission policies and program requirements vary among four-year colleges, all students need to be acquainted with the specific requirements of the college or university of their choice. Students should consult and work closely with counselors and/or faculty advisors in transfer planning and for designing an appropriate NVCC program of study.
The Counseling Centers maintain a collection of college catalogs from Virginia and neighboring states. Many Virginia colleges publish transfer guides that indicate the community college courses to be completed for transfer and their equivalencies at the four-year college. The Counseling Centers and libraries also have a variety of college guides, specialty books, computer software, etc. to assist students in all aspects of transfer planning. The NVCC Web site has additional transfer resources (http://www.nvcc.edu/transfer). Most of the Virginia colleges have Web sites on the Internet that can also provide students with valuable information.
A course with a grade of less than C is usually not accepted for transfer even if the student has an A.S. or A.A. degree. Students must submit a completed transcript request form to an NVCC admissions office to have an official copy of their transcript forwarded to the intended transfer college or university.
The Virginia State Council of Higher Education and the State Board for Community Colleges have endorsed a State Policy on Transfer. This policy gives guidelines for Virginia community colleges and state-supported senior institutions on admission of transfer students, acceptance and application of transfer credits, services for and responsibilities of transfer students, and a transfer module for students who transfer without an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree. The State Policy on Transfer states that students who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree (does not automatically include General Studies) should be considered to have met lower division general education requirements of senior Virginia public institutions.
NVCC has a special agreement with George Mason University that states that an NVCC student who graduates with an A.A. or A.S. degree, who earns at least 24 semester hours of transferable work at NVCC, and who maintains a curriculum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 is guaranteed admission to George Mason. (This policy applies on a case-by-case basis to students who have earned an A.S. degree in General Studies.) Counselors can provide students with more specific information on the state transfer policy, the GMU/NVCC agreement, and how these relate to individual transfer plans.

4General Studies
A foundation program which can be tailored to meet the requirements of a specific Baccalaureate Degree at a specific four-year institution.
5Science
A foundation program for Baccalaureate Degrees in Science with majors in Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Forestry, Geology, Home Economics, Oceanography, Physics, etc.

Transfer Module from the State Policy on Transfer
The Virginia State Policy on Transfer lists general education courses that transfer to the majority of public four-year degree granting institutions in Virginia. These courses are referred to as the "transfer module." Many other NVCC courses also transfer to these institutions. Some Virginia colleges and universities will grant special status to students who have completed 35 hours from the Transfer Module. If you plan to transfer prior to completing an A.A. or an A.S. degree, you should consider completing courses from the following list. Also, students completing an A.A.A. or A.A.S. degree may benefit from selecting courses from the Transfer Module if their long-term goal is to complete a four-year degree program.
