OPTICIAN
Career Studies Certificate AN

Purpose: This career studies certificate is designed in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Labor to meet the Apprenticeship education requirement established by the State Board for Opticians. The curriculum will prepare registered Apprentice Opticians to sit for the state Opticianry licensing examinations.

Prerequisites: Students must be registered as an Apprentice Optician with the Virginia Department of Labor prior to beginning course work. Students must be eligible for ENG 111 and MTH 126.

Total credits for the Optician Career Studies Certificate = 29.

1 OPT 111 is the introductory course for all finishing and surfacing laboratory work. This course is required to be taken in conjunction with OPT 190, Coordinated Practice.

2 OPT 121 is an introductory course for ophthalmic optics. This course is required to be taken in the first semester.

3 OPT 190 is supervised coordinated practice which takes place on the job. To fulfill the requirements of a Registered Apprentice, 2000 hours per year are required.

4 OPT 123 is the introductory course for all ophthalmic dispensing work. This course is required to be taken in conjunction with OPT 190, Coordinated Practice.
