Advising Basics

1st semester
During your first semester you should:

  • Register for SDV 100 College Success Skills. These course helps you make a smooth transition to college. They are taught by members of the Student Services Team. Each member has a master’s degree and is trained to assist students with meeting their educational goals.
  • Make sure you are program placed (aka “declare a major”).
  • Read your course syllabi often.
  • Keep the schedule of classes nearby or know how to find it online.  The information printed in the schedule of classes will help you throughout the semester.
  • Visit the Student Services Center located in Room 202-WO campus to declare your major.
  • Visit  the division office of your major to gather contact information on your faculty advisor or check your NOVA Connect account for faculty advisor information.
  • Get to know other students and faculty. Join a club or attend an on campus event and take advantage of all of the opportunities at NOVA.

2nd semester
During your second semester you should:

  • Meet with your faculty advisor. During this meeting you can discuss course planning, transfer options and how to further enhance your academic experience here at NOVA!
  • Ask about the Student Services Center or your faculty advisor for information on Advising Week. You can also consult the Schedule of Classes.
  • Attend and Academic Skills Workshop to do a refresher on student skills.
  • Enroll in SDV 100 if you were unable to take the course during your first semester. It’s never too late to take SDV 100.
