NOVA is a part of the Health Information Technology Community College Consortium Project, responsible for delivering workforce development training to Allied Healthcare professionals. The Health Information Systems Center of Excellence, located on the Medical Education Campus leads participation in the Consortium Project by offering training through the HIT Workforce Roles Program.

The HIT Workforce Roles Program began in September 2010. The program has been very successful and as a result, the HIS Center of Excellence was granted an extension beyond the anticipated April 2012 completion date. Under this program, the HIS Center of Excellence has met and surpassed the number of students to be trained with government funded grants. To date, more than 300 students have been trained through the HIS Center of Excellence HIT Workforce Roles Training Program.

In anticipation of the Grant coming to a close, the HIS Center of Excellence developed a 2 semester Health IT Career Studies Certificate (CSC) to continue training a qualified Health IT workforce to support the adoption and implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR's) nationwide. The Health IT CSC can be obtained through any of Virginia's 22 Community Colleges.

The 21 credit curriculum program trains students with employment experience in Healthcare or Information Technology to become competent in all aspects of workflow process analysis and redesign as it relates to: adoption, implementation, maintenance, and optimization phases of the transition to the use of electronic health record systems. This new program will begin in Fall 2012.
