Loudoun Honors Program

Honors courses are designed to enable qualified, motivated students to enrich their study. Honors students are encouraged to think independently and critically, to participate actively in discussions and to learn in collaboration with fellow students. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to learning.

Core Curriculum

The Honors Core Curriculum seeks to provide a comprehensive educational experience for honors students and allows them to interact as a community of learners. Each honors course is designated as such on your grade reports and transcripts. Universities and employers favor students who seek the greater challenge offered through honors courses.

If you complete at least 18 hours of specified honors courses, the completion of the Honors Core curriculum will be designated on your transcript and there will be a gold seal on your diploma. In addition, you will also receive the Honors Certificate of completion.

Qualifications for Honors

To qualify to enroll in honors courses, first fill out an application to the College. Once you have been admitted to the College, you can qualify for honors by meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Score a 92% and 94% respectively on the reading and writing sections of the English Placement Examination
  • Graduate in the top 10% of your high school class
  • Score 1100 on the SAT
  • Earn a 3.5 grade point average after at least one semester at NVCC and have strong reading and writing skills
  • Receive recommendations from two professors with whom you have studied
  • Life experience, special aptitude or interest that indicates potential for success in honors courses

To qualify to enroll in the Math 152 honors course, you may also qualify by:

  • Scoring a 40 on the Algebra section of the Math Placement Exam
  • Receiving a recommendation from your Math 151 professor

If you meet one of the above qualifications, then you should:

  • Fill out an application form for the honors program
  • Have faculty or counselor sign permission sheet for the desired course
  • Arrange for an brief interview with a counselor

Once your application form has been accepted you may register for courses designated in the schedule of classes as honors sections.
