Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a collection of Frequently Asked Questions about the Academic Center for Reading and Writing. Chances are, if you have a question, there is probably an answer for it here!
What kind of help can I get?
Up to 90 minutes of free, one-on-one consultations with a Writing Consultant. You can also attend as many workshops as space allows.
Can you give me a writing assignment to work on?
No, we leave that to the experts - your professors. However, you do not need an assignment to see us. If you want to work on grammar, organization or MLA, we have handouts available.
Who can get help?
Any student enrolled in a class on this campus.
Are appointments necessary? Can I come without an appointment?
For guaranteed help, yes. Call 703.845.6363 to make an appointment or sign up in Bisdorf 229. Appointments fill up fast! There are walk-in slots available as well.
Should I write my paper first?
It's a good idea if you do, but we offer help at all stages of the writing process -- focusing, planning, organizing, revising, and editing.
Will you tell my professor?
That's your decision. If you'd like the session to be confidential, just tell the Writing Consultant.
