Event Description Every year, 1.8 million children die of water-related diseases worldwide. A clean, reliable source of drinking water would prevent most of these illnesses and greatly reduce childhood mortality.
What are the factors that thwart efforts to bring clean drinking water to every village? What organisms cause which diseases? Which diseases are becoming more prominent?
Join us as we discuss the geographical, political, socioeconomic, biological, economic, and public health issues that connect our world with that of water, and waterborne infectious disease.
Dr. Gillian S. Backus, Associate Professor, Biology, Loudoun, joined Northern VA Community College in 2009.
She earned a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of North Carolina and has extensive research experience at the several leading science institutions including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences where she completed independent interdisciplinary mechanistic research on genetic susceptibility to ozone-induced pulmonary inflammation.
She has also worked at the US Environmental Protection Agency, D.C. where she critically analyzed biological and toxicological data from current literature to develop formal EPA risk assessments used throughout the U.S. private and public sectors, and at the National Academy of Sciences and the Marian Koshland Science Museum D.C. where she explored science and policy issues via panel discussions and seminars offered at NAS, DC-area organizations and congressional hearings.
Gillian Backus has created and is the lead instructor of the new Interdisciplinary Environmental Laboratory Science Course at NOVA. |
