RE: Guidelines for Peer Reviewers of Evaluation Reports
DATE:

  • center around student learning outcomes
  • demonstrate with appropriate supporting evidence that the program or discipline is effective
  • result in an action plan to improve student learning
  • produce results that are useful to faculty in improving the effectiveness of the program or discipline and to the college in its planning, budgeting, and marketing efforts

You and _______ have agreed to read and review the attached evaluation report. You should each review the report individually before comparing impressions and recommendations. As a team, you will present a single, joint report to the committee.

Please remember that your focus should be on the thoroughness of the report, assessment methods used, assessment findings, and actions recommended and suggested rather than on editorial details. Unless it requires significant changes, the body of the report will not be changed.

Each review committee was asked to use the attached "Elements of Effective Programs" as a possible framework for the review of their program or discipline. The elements may be of use to you in your consideration of the thoroughness of the evaluation report. The productivity and administrative evaluations can be found in the appendix and have been signed by the appropriate division chair.

Please make every effort to communicate your comments to the primary author of the report and the chair of the program or discipline review committee before the report is presented to the curriculum committee. Not only is this a professional courtesy, it will provide an opportunity to correct any misperceptions or incorrect interpretations you may have formed while reading the report.

Curriculum committee members will have only the executive summary and action plan portions of the report. Therefore, it is most useful if you make your comments general in terms of the thoroughness of the report rather than referencing specific text within the report. Since the committee may wish to amend the action plan, it is important that you emphasize which actions are clearly supported by evidence in the report and which do not seem to be well supported.

Thank you for being a peer reviewer for this evaluation report. I hope that you will find the exercise useful and valuable in understanding the program or discipline reviewed. I am sure that your comments will help to improve and strengthen the ____________.
