Online Tutoring
Welcome to the Annandale Writing Center’s Online Tutoring page! We offer three different kinds of online tutoring: Live Online Tutoring, Podcast Tutoring, and E-mail Tutoring. Each specific type has its advantages, disadvantages, and unique requirements. Please take the time to read our policies for online tutoring as well as the descriptions of Live Online Tutoring, Podcast Tutoring, and E-mail Tutoring. It is important to understand online tutoring and to choose the right kind for you.
General Policies for All Online Tutoring
It is your writing.
- Your tutor will offer suggestions based on his or her response as a reader, but you will decide how to use or not use those suggestions when you revise.
It is your grade.
- As with all tutoring, the Writing Center cannot guarantee a grade on an assignment or in a course. Because it is your writing, you are responsible for the quality of your final draft. Thus, you are also responsible for your grade.
Your session is confidential.
- All face-to-face and online tutoring sessions are confidential. Instructors will not be told about a tutoring session unless you ask your tutor to inform them.
Live Online Tutoring:
What is Live Online Tutoring?
- Live Online tutoring brings the Face-to-Face tutoring session to your home! You can use your computer and internet connection to look at your paper with a tutor and chat about it through Google Chat and Google Docs. If you have a microphone, you can speak to your tutor in addition to Google Chat, and if you have a webcam, you and your tutor can see each other.
- Enjoy the convenience of online tutoring and the human touch of face-to-face tutoring. Live Online Tutoring is perfect for students who can’t make it to campus and students in online, hybrid, or dual enrollment courses.
Live Online Tutoring requires an appointment with a tutor.
- The Writing Center offers Live Online tutoring during the following times:
- Monday – Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
- Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
- The last Live Online tutoring session will begin thirty minutes prior to closing.
- To schedule a Live Online tutoring session, e-mail WritingAN@nvcc.edu and type “Live Online Tutoring” in the subject line. In the body of the e-mail, please type your full name, Student/Empl ID, your phone number, and the day and time when you would like your session. Or you can call 703.323.3341 and someone will help you schedule an appointment.
Podcast Tutoring:
What is Podcast Tutoring?
- When you use Podcast tutoring, you will send your writing to a tutor. The tutor will read your writing, record his or her feedback in a video/audio clip, and then send you the clip as an attachment to an e-mail.
- Podcast tutoring combines the personal touch of Face-to-Face tutoring with the convenience of not having to make an appointment for a specific time. It is perfect for students with busy schedules and students in online, hybrid, or dual enrollment courses, who want a more personal response to their writing.
When do we accept requests for Podcast Tutoring?
- When classes are in session, the Writing Center accepts requests for Podcast tutoring twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Requests are not accepted during holidays, during finals week, or during breaks between semesters. Requests made during those times will not be answered.
When do we respond to e-mailed papers?
- The Writing Center sends Tutoring Podcasts within two days (48 hours). If you do not receive a video/audio podcast within two days, please e-mail WritingAN@nvcc.edu or call 703.323.3341 to ask about the status of your Podcast.

What is E-mail Tutoring?
- You will e-mail your paper to WritingAN@nvcc.edu. A tutor will read your paper, write some feedback for you, and send both the paper and the feedback as an attachment to a reply e-mail. No appointment is necessary.
- E-mail tutoring is ideal for students with busy schedules who can’t commit to an appointment and students in online, hybrid, or dual enrollment courses, who don’t mind only a written response to their writing.
