Welcome to the Annandale Writing Center’s Online Tutoring page! E-mail tutoring is ideal for students with busy schedules who can’t commit to an appointment and students in online, hybrid, or dual enrollment courses, who don’t mind only a written response to their writing. It is important to understand online tutoring, as the service has advantages, disadvantages, and unique requirements. Please take the time to read our descriptions and policies to ensure a timely and effective experience.
General Policies for All Online Tutoring
It is your writing.
- Your tutor will offer suggestions based on his or her response as a reader, but you will decide how to use or not use those suggestions when you revise.
It is your grade.
- As with all tutoring, the Writing Center cannot guarantee a grade on an assignment or in a course. Because it is your writing, you are responsible for the quality of your final draft. Thus, you are also responsible for your grade.
Your session is confidential.
- All face-to-face and online tutoring sessions are confidential. Instructors will not be told about a tutoring session unless you ask your tutor to inform them.
What is E-mail Tutoring?
You will e-mail your paper and the “Request for Online Tutoring” form to email@example.com. A tutor will read your paper, write some feedback for you, and send both the paper and the feedback as an attachment to a reply e-mail. No appointment is necessary.
To use E-mail Tutoring, download this form (RTF) and follow the directions. Submissions without the completed form may be deleted without response.
When do we accept e-mailed papers?
When classes are in session, the Writing Center accepts e-mailed papers twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. E-mailed papers are not accepted during holidays, during finals week, or during breaks between semesters. Essays e-mailed during those times will be deleted without a response.
When do we respond to e-mailed papers?
The Writing Center responds to e-mailed papers within four weekdays. If you do not receive a response within four weekdays, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 703.323.3341 to ask about the status of your paper.
Each student is eligible for one online tutoring session per week (comparable to a thirty-minute one-on-one tutoring session). The same essay maybe resubmitted once. After an essay is resubmitted and receives additional feedback, it is ineligible for further email tutoring sessions. We recommend scheduling a one-on-one tutoring session for continued support on the assignment.
