Announcements
Summer tutoring will run from May 26-July 30. Tutors will be available to assist students on a first-come, first-served basis from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. If no one is signed up for the last session, which must begin by 1:30 p.m., the tutors will be sent home to conserve funds. Students taking summer classes from the Annandale Campus are urged to come early and often to receive assistance.
Our tutors are trained to assist students at any stage of the writing process or with most reading goals. Tutors are not permitted to edit or proofread student work. Doing so would reflect the knowledge of the tutor and not the knowledge of the student visitor.
When you come here, you are more likely to show an improvement if you account for the following:
- you have enough time before the assignment is due to take into account the tutor’s questions and suggestions;
- you understand that an improvement in your writing involves finding proper resources and investigating those resources outside of your time with a tutor;
- you have time to visit again in case you want additional feedback or in case the tutor did not have adequate time to get through the whole paper;
- you visit the Center frequently and try to see the same tutor;
- you have enough time to visit in case you want feedback from a different tutor;
- you have a personal commitment to improving your writing, and you are willing to work in ways that go beyond your assignments for class;
- you understand that you will not clear up the grammatical habits you have formulated over years of practice in thirty minutes. For that reason, you schedule multiple sessions over which you can talk about multiple grammatical concerns.
About the Center
The Writing Center's services are available to NOVA students who are enrolled in classes on the Annandale Campus or through the Extended Learning Institute. Our goal is to help students improve their reading and writing skills. You can make an appointment with one of our tutors or stop by and use our self-paced computer software.
The Reading and Writing Center follows the college inclement weather policy. If the Campus is closed, all appointments are cancelled.
The Reading and Writing Center tutors cannot help with anything labeled "Test" or "Exam" without an instructor's permission prior to a scheduled appointment.
Occasionally there are changes to posted hours. Please call the information line at 703.323.3341 for updated hours.
