Foreign Language Placement Tests
Foreign language placement tests are no longer offered at the Language Center. In order to take a test, students should go to the Testing Center in CA 115. However, as a service to our students, this page was created as a guideline for information on the Testing Center and Language Placement tests available.
Spanish Placement Test:
The Spanish placement test is a written test consisting of 50 questions. These questions cover grammar and reading comprehension; there is no test of a student’s listening or speaking ability. The test is not timed, but students should allow at least an hour for the test. Based on how many questions the student answers correctly, the Language Center will give a verbal recommendation as to whether the student should register for Spanish 101, Spanish 102 or Spanish 201.
French Placement Test
The French placement test is a written test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions. These questions cover grammar and reading comprehension; there is no test of a student’s listening or speaking ability. The test is not timed, but students should allow approximately 45 minutes for the test. Based on how many questions the student answers correctly, the Language Center will give a verbal recommendation as to whether the student should register for French 101, French 102 or French 201.
German Placement Test
The German placement test is a written test consisting of 50 questions. The test is not timed, but students should allow at least an hour for the test. Based on how many questions the student answers correctly, the Language Center will give a verbal recommendation as to whether the student should register for German 101, German 102, German 201 or German 202.
Arabic Placement Test
The Arabic placement test consists of three separate multiple-choice tests. These are all written tests; there is no test of a student’s listening or speaking ability.
Based on the student’s performance on these tests, the Language Center will give a verbal recommendation as to whether the student should register for Arabic 102, Arabic 201, Arabic 202 or be exempt from requirements. If the student qualifies to be exempt from requirements, the Language Center will forward the student’s results to the Foreign Language Department and the student will be responsible for following up with the department in order to get a waiver processed.
