The How to Understand an Assignment Module for students provides students with helpful tips on how to carefully read and interpret your writing assignments. The module also defines what a rubric is and explains how it is often used as an evaluative tool with writing assignments.


Outcomes and Objectives

The How to Understand an Assignment student module meets the following NOVA and VCCS goals and student learning outcomes:

Using

Suggested Assignments and Assessments:

1. Reinterpreting the Assignment - After distributing the assignment sheet and grading rubric, ask students to answer the following:

    • Restate what the assignment is asking in their own words.
    • How does this assignment relate to at least three of the course objectives?
    • How will this assignment be graded?
    • Describe how at least two campus resources (other than the instructor) can assist students if they need help on this assignment.

  • A tutor at the Annandale's Reading & Writing Center will gladly work one-on-one with your students to help interpret what the assignment is asking your students to do and will assist your students in developing a plan for project completion.
  • Tutors will also work with your students to brainstorm topics, develop outlines, develop thesis statements and much more!
  • Librarians at the Annandale Library are available to assist in the research process and can assist with topic development.
