| Submission Guidelines
Important Notice:Selected submissions may appear in the Calliope publication, on the Calliope website, and in additional media as well.
We invite submissions from any student enrolled in an AN class during the ’11—’12 academic year (consisting of the Summer 2011 semester, Fall 2011 semester and Spring 2012 semester).
To be considered, all submissions must conform to the following submission guidelines:
Categories for Submission and for Best in Publication Contest Prizes
Work in the following categories will be considered:
A. Poetry
B. Fiction
C. Creative Non-Fiction
D. ESL Prose or Poetry (for students currently enrolled in an ESL class) F. Poetry and nonfiction in any of the foreign languages taught at NOVA
E. Artwork (includes drawing, painting, design, computer design, photography and high quality photographs of ceramics and sculpture)
Number of Submissions
A student may submit up to five (5) individual works in each of the categories listed above; Calliope will publish no more than three works in each category by any one student.
Deadlines
All literary and art submissions must be received in the proper format by the following dates:
Art submissions: Art can be dropped off on Tuesday, February 28 or Wednesday, February 29 in CM 342 between 9 AM- 5PM ONLY. View the 2012 Art Student Exhibition Prospectus here for more information.
Literary submissions: The deadline for literary submissions is February 15, 2012.
Length Requirements
Poetry: up to 2 pages in length (40 lines per page max. including stanza breaks)
Fiction: stories up to 1500 words
Creative Non-Fiction: up to 1500 words
Creative Non-Fiction in Foreign Languages: up to 500 words
Poetry in Foreign Languages: up to 2 pages in length (30 lines per page max. including stanza breaks)
Format
A. All literary entries must be submitted as Word documents, single-spaced, in 12 pt font (Arial or Times New Roman preferred).
Note: We cannot print individual lines of poetry that exceed 85 characters across.
B. All entries – including Artwork entries – must have a unique title attached to the work. Titles for literary entries will appear on the first page of the work. (The editors may reposition the title in publication.) Titles for artworks will appear on the back of the work and on the separate cover sheet.
C. Artwork will be accepted in color or black and white. (Whether images will be printed in color is subject to budget and other considerations.) Please note that artwork should not be submitted electronically, but instead original, unframed, 2-D work, and actual 3-D work, labeled with the work's title, the artist's name and contact information and (in the case of 2-D work) encased in a folder or portfolio labeled with the artist's name. D. Identifying information as detailed below should appear on the Cover Page for each submission.
Cover Page
Please be sure to include a cover page listing all of the following items with each work submitted:
A. Author’s or Artist’s Complete Name
B. Contact Information, including address; home, cell and work phone; and NVCC-assigned email address and other email address
C. Title of Piece
D. Submission Category - Please specify the category in which you want your work considered (see categories above)
Electronic Submission
Submit your literary work as an attachment to the Calliope email address – calliope@nvcc.edu.
Submit your cover page as a separate attachment to the same email message.
Submit one work and one cover page per email only.
Please submit writing electronically by February 16, 2012, using your NOVA-assigned e-mail address.
Art submissions should be made in person on Tuesday, February 28 or Wednesday, February 29 in CM 342 between 9 AM- 5PM, but a cover page for each work must be submitted via email, as well. |
