Welcome

NOVA - Annandale began offering American Sign Language (ASL) courses in 1992.  To satisfy regional needs, the department continues to expand course offerings in both ASL and Interpreting.

The ASL/INT department is happy to announce the approval of the Associate in Applied Science degree in ASL-English Interpretation.  This is a two year program that prepares students to take the state and national certification exams for ASL Interpreters.  In addition,  two Career Studies Certificate programs are available: the ASL Certificate and the ASL Interpreting Certificate.  The ASL certificate is designed to provide students with knowledge of the language and culture of the Deaf community.  The ASL Interpreting Certificate is geared towards students who are interested in learning the theories and skills of interpreting without completing all of the courses required for the degree program.

Students enrolling in A.A.S. degree or the certificate programs do so for a variety of reasons. Some enroll for personal enrichment, while others want a good foundation to pursue the field of interpreting or enhance their skills for a related career.  Whatever a student's interest, our qualified instructors provide a proper introduction to ASL and the Deaf Community/Culture and ASL - English Interpretation.
