Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies

The Associate of Science in General Studies with a Specialization in Recreation, Parks & Leisure Studies is a two year program.

Also available are two Career Studies Certificate programs in Outdoor Recreation & Resource Management and Recreation Programming and Administration.

rock climbing RPK 175: Rock Climbing classes meet a total of two evenings on campus. The field component meets the following Saturday/Sunday daytime hours at Great Falls Park. The outside fees are $100.
backpacker RPK 170: Recreational Backpacking classes meet two evenings on campus. The field component meets the following Saturday/Saturday evening and Sunday (overnight required) at Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and Retreat Center, Fort Valley, Virginia. Small fee for overnight lodging payable to the Retreat Center.
canoe RPK 171: Canoeing classes meet two evenings on campus. The field component meets the following Saturday through Sunday (Overnight Required) at Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and Retreat Center, Fort Valley, Virginia. The fee, payable to Caroline Furnace, is $45 dollars for use of their life jackets, river shuttle and Saturday night lodging.

31st Annual Ghost Train at Burke Lake Park, 2011

Northern Virginia Community College and Burke Lake Park are hosting their 31st annual “Ghost Train” community event at Burke Lake Park (directions) on Oct. 22, 23, 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Ghost Train celebrates its 31st year providing fun and affordable activities for children and their families in celebration of the autumn season.

The Ghost Train will feature something for all ages including a moon bounce, cotton candy, and carousel culminating with a magical train ride through the park. The train travels along the tracks depicting scenes of popular children’s stories. The cost per ticket is $5.00. Children under the age of 2 can ride for free.The cost to ride the Carousel is $1.75 per person.

Come share your costume, excitement and support for the season with the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Program, Northern Virginia Community College in cooperation with Burke Lake Park, Fairfax County Park Authority. Burke Lake Park is located at 7315 Ox Road in Fairfax Station.
