Threat of Bombing
This document is a summary of the policies and procedures relevant to the Annandale Campus Emergency Response Plan in the event of threats of explosive detonation. This summary only contains information of interest to Campus personnel and does not address the responsibilities of other college personnel.
Awareness/Threat Receipt/Command Notification
- Awareness of a Bomb Threats may come through a telephone call (to anybody, any office, any campus), through email, a note or other message (however, telephone call is most likely).
- Any person who receives a bomb threat shall immediately inform the Campus Police (2-3111).
Actions
If a determination is made to evacuate, specific activities shall proceed as follows:
- Notification by land line or word of mouth by the Emergency Response Coordinator to all Emergency Building Wardens (Floor Wardens in their absence) to evacuate the buildings(s) due to Bomb threat.
- Evacuation of the Building(s) shall be immediate and occupants shall be directed to follow the general principles of a Fire Evacuation with the additional guidance to: "Remove and take with you all your personal bags, packages, boxes, containers (in addition to coats, purses and keys)."
- Under no circumstances should Wardens or occupants take it upon themselves to search for explosive devices.
- Everyone at the threatened site shall be instructed by Wardens to turn off any type of device that emits a radio frequency (cell phones, radios, etc.). On-site personnel will conduct all communications via land line telephones, runners, or voice.
- The Emergency Response Coordinator will stay in close communication with Provost and police.
Evening, Weekend and Holiday Occurrences
The same procedures apply when the threat occurs in the evening or on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday. In the absence of the Provost and Business Manager, the Campus Evening Administrator will assume the responsibilities of both positions and notify the Provost by land line. In the absence of the Evening Administrator, the ranking police officer on campus will discharge the responsibilities of all appropriate activities - including notification to the Provost.
