STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
At the beginning of each semester:
- Read the posted evacuation routes in classrooms and labs - be sure you know where emergency exits, fire alarms and fire extinguishers are located in the building.
- Understand the class policy on assembling after the evacuation - know the location of the Assembly Area.
- There are designated Areas of Rescue for individuals who cannot evacuate the building immediately, be sure you know the locations.
When an alarm is activated:
- Exit the building immediately, following the posted evacuation route for your classroom go to the class Assembly Area.
- Be sure to take books, coats and personal items with you.
- Advise your instructor if you know of any occupants who were left in the room/building.
- Do not re-enter the building until the all-clear signal.

Emergency Shelter-in-Place
Tornado Warning:
- Move to the bottom floor of building.
- Move to areas with no windows - corridors, bathrooms and inner classrooms.
- Assist individuals with disabilities to find the safest place possible.
- Get down and stay as close to the floor as possible - cover your head.
- Listen for the all-clear signal.
- Gunshots in the building:
- Take cover immediately.
- DO NOT go into the hallways to see what is going on.
- If you have a cell phone call 911 then Campus Police at 703.323.3111
- Evacuate to a safe area when you receive instructions from emergency personnel.
Power Outage:
- If power is not regained quickly, move to an area where there is adequate daylight or emergency lighting.
- If asked to evacuate the building by emergency personnel, exit as calmly and carefully as possible.
- Be sure your Faculty know of any individuals who need assistance to exit the building or who have gone to the Area of Rescue.
- Do not re-enter the building until the power has been restored. Listen for information regarding building/campus closing.
