FACULTY AND STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

At the beginning of each semester:

Review emergency instructions and evacuation procedures with your students during the first class session. Show them the location of any posted evacuation routes and designated locations such as Severe Weather Shelters, Areas of Rescue and Evacuation Assembly Points.

When an evacuation alarm is activated:

  1. Insist that all building occupants exit the building immediately. Remind students of the evacuation route for your classroom. Encourage everyone to stay calm. (Be prepared for an alternate route if necessary). Do not allow students to wander away. Do not use elevators!
  2. Remind occupants to take books, coats and personal items with them.
  3. Close all doors as rooms are emptied.
  4. Individuals with disabilities may exit the building if there is access at ground level, otherwise they may go to the Area of Rescue to await assistance from rescue personnel.
  5. The Emergency Building or Floor Warden should check with you at your Evacuation Assembly Point to determine your status - please also advise the Warden of any individuals known to be in an Area of Rescue or otherwise unaccounted for from your class or department.
  6. If you have been given an assignment to "cover" one of the doors, go to that location, assist emergency personnel in keeping occupants at a safe distance from the building (at least 50 feet).
  7. Help insure that no one re-enters the building until you have received the all-clear signal.

Tornado warning:

  • Quickly move students/employees to the rooms designated as Severe Weather Shelter Areas (signs are mounted at room entrance - also posted on Web).
  • Safe areas for shelter also include rooms with no windows - some corridors, bathrooms an interior classrooms.
  • If the weather impact (hurricane/tornado) is imminent, direct occupants to get as close to the floor as possible and cover their heads.
  • Wait to be notified of the all-clear signal.

If you hear gunshots or lockdown announcement:

  • Do not go into the hallway to see what is going on.
  • Seek out and/or remain in a 'closed room' that is safe from break-in.
  • If room is equipped with a door lock, lock the door immediately.
  • If necessary, and appropriate furniture is available, barricade doors.
  • If you have a cell phone call 911 and Campus Police at 703.323.3111.
  • Take roll and make a list of occupants, include any missing or extra individuals.
  • Ignore any fire alarms; the building will not be evacuated using this method.
  • Remain in room and evacuate occupants only when you receive instructions from emergency personnel.

In the event of a power outage:

  • If power is not regained in minutes, move occupants to areas where there is adequate daylight or emergency lighting.
  • If asked to evacuate the building by emergency personnel, assist the occupants to exit as carefully as possible.
  • Notify Campus Police/Emergency Personnel of any individuals with disabilities who need assistance to exit the building.
  • Take your class or group to the Evacuation Assembly Point.
  • Do not re-enter the building until the power has been restored. Await further instructions.
