Description and Content
Spanish
for International Travel (SIT) is published by Command Spanish®, Inc.
and consists of a 40+ page comb-bound manual with an accompanying audio
cassette tape. In addition to a special section on pronunciation, SIT
contains the following language sections: Greetings and Goodbyes; Etiquette
and Social Niceties; Introductions and Self-Identifications; Numbers;
Compliments; Ordering Food and Drink; Using a Taxi; Hotel Needs; Communications
Strategies; Shopping; Emergencies and Telephone Etiquette. It also includes:
bilingual Food Request Glossaries and Menu Readers; Street and Other Useful
Signs and Maps of the Spanish-Speaking World.
Program Description
This
is a functional language program for individuals who plan to travel to
Spanish-speaking countries for leisure. It focuses on those language items
most commonly required by tourists to comfortably function abroad. No
prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.
Goal
To
provide prospective tourists with language and cross-cultural skills so
that they may better enjoy their travel or vacation in Spanish-speaking
countries.
Objectives
Upon
completion of the program, participants will be able to use Spanish to:
greet people; engage in etiquette and social niceties; introduce oneself
and others; count to 2000; compliment people, food, and drink; order food
and drink; give directions to a cab driver; register in a hotel; make
simple purchases; request emergency assistance and make and receive telephone
calls.
Methods of Instruction
Modeling,
intensive drill, choral response, alpha-beta line, learning pairs and
triads, Total Physical Response, role-playing, simulations, and situation
cards.
Cross-Cultural Component
Included
in student manual. Suggestion: 2 hours with emphasis is on geography,
currency, dates, and food and drink.
Intended Audience
This
is intended for anyone who is traveling to a Spanish-speaking country.
Length of Instruction
8
to 16 hours, depending on client's needs and interests.
Special Considerations
This
program may be tailored to specific areas of the Spanish-speaking world.
For instance, if all participants are planning a trip to Spain, then emphasis
will be primarily or totally on that country.
