Supervising Spanish Speaking Employees

Materials Description and Content
Supervising Spanish-Speaking Employees (SSSE) is published by Command Spanish®, Inc. and consists of a 44-page comb-bound manual with an accompanying cassette tape. It was co-authored by Dr. Maryjane Dunn and Dr. Sam L. Slick. It is primarily a cross-cultural training manual that deals with a wide range of issues associated with supervising Spanish-speaking workers. It covers such items as demographics, stereotypes, literacy, education, gender issues, religion, work ethic, safety issues, disciplining workers, health issues, promotion, and many more.

Program Description
This is a comprehensive treatment of the many issues involved with effective supervising of Spanish-speaking employees. It also includes a small language component that covers greetings, etiquette, compliments, and safety and medical emergencies. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

Goal
To minimize or eliminate barriers to understanding and communication in the workplace so that supervisors can better manage Spanish-speaking employees and thereby improve productivity, harmony, and stability within the workforce.

Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to: better manage Spanish-speaking employees; interpret gender-related issues among Spanish-speaking workers; differentiate among various Latino groups; develop an appreciation for Spanish-speaking workers' cultural, religious, and family values; improve supervisor/employee relations; promote team building; increase workforce morale and motivation; promote worker safety; deal more effectively with disciplinary problems and utilize basic workplace Spanish.

Methods of Instruction
Lecture, activities, modeling, choral response, alpha-beta line, learning pairs and triads, role-playing, simulations, and situation cards.

Cross-Cultural Component
See above.

Intended Audience
This is intended for supervisors and managers of Spanish-speaking employees. Also recommended for directors and staff of Human Resources Departments.

Length of Instruction
8 hours.

Special Considerations
Although SSSE is constructed to address all Spanish-speaking groups in the labor force, it can be customized to specific workforces. For examples, if all of the supervised workers are Mexican nationals, then the program can emphasize issues of that particular group.
