Materials Description and Content
Spanish for Nursing (SN) is published by Command Spanish®, Inc. and consists of a 106 page manual bound in a 3-ring binder with 4 accompanying audio cassette tapes. It was developed in consultation with nursing instructors and practicing nurses. The manual is dedicated primarily to office nursing and hospital nursing. In addition to a special section devoted to pronunciation, SN contains the following work-specific language sections for office nursing: Patient Body Commands; Patient Traffic; Intake; Assisting Physician's Exam; Laboratory Procedures; Patient Transport; Medicines and Injections; Patient Food and Drink; Family Visits and Patient Discharge. SN also contains the following glossaries: Human Body (interior and exterior); Diseases, Disorders, and Injuries; Conditions and Symptoms; Operations and Procedures; Medical Personnel; and Pharmacological.

Program Description
This program prepares non-Spanish-speaking nurses to provide medical care and attention to Spanish-speaking patients in medical office settings and in hospitals. In addition to workplace Spanish language, this program provides transcultural training for nurses and future nurses. Emphasis is placed on enhancing quality of patient care. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

Goal
To prepare non-Spanish-speaking nurses to better interact with and care for Spanish-speaking patients.

Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to use Spanish to: obtain basic information and patient history; obtain vital signs; perform physical assessment; perform routine procedures; prepare patients for surgery or other procedures; administer medications and injections; feed and bathe patients; assist and interact with patient's family; honor patient's requests; assist in emergency situations; identify Hispanic culture traits relating to medical care; reduce Hispanics' fear of hospital settings, and understand Hispanic health belief system.

Methods of Instruction
Modeling, intensive drill, choral response, alpha-beta line, learning pairs and triads, Total Physical Response, role-playing, simulations, and situation cards.

Cross-Cultural Component
Not included in manual.

Intended Audience
This program is intended for practicing B.S.N.s, R.N.s, L.V.N.s/L.P.N.s, and C.N.A.s.

Length of Instruction
12-45 hours, depending on client's needs and interests.

Special Considerations
This manual is divided primarily between office nursing and hospital nursing.
