Materials Description and Content
Survival Spanish for Law Enforcement Officers (SSLEO) is published by Command Spanish®, Inc. and consists of a 97 page manual bound in a 3-ring binder with 4 accompanying audio cassette tapes and a wallet-size Miranda Warning & Waiver card. It was authored by Dr. Sam L. Slick in consultation with leading professionals in the field of law enforcement. In addition to a special section devoted to pronunciation, SSLEO contains the following work-specific language sections: Greetings and Diffusers; Officer Identification; Stopping a Suspect; Searching a Suspect; Control and Arrest; Field Information Questions; Vehicle Stops; Searching a Vehicle; Executing a Warrant; Traffic and Parking Citations; DUIs; Booking a Suspect; Medical Emergencies; Miranda Warning and Dirty/Alert Words. SSLEO also contains the following appendices: Drug Table; Numbers; Dates; Spanish Nicknames; Descriptor Questions; Criminal Justice Terminology; Parts of the Body and Consent to Search Forms.

Program Description
This program is designed to provide non-Spanish-speaking police officers with functional skills in Spanish. The program utilizes phonetic encoding to address the most important Spanish commands, questions, and phrases critical to police work. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

Goal
To prepare non-Spanish-speaking police officers to use Spanish language skills to enhance their ability to aid victims and control offenders in potentially dangerous situations involving Spanish speakers.

Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to use Spanish to: disarm a suspect; make arrests and ID individuals; stop and search a vehicle; conduct field sobriety tests; issue warrants, assist in emergencies; read the Miranda Warning; render aid to victims, and manage prisoners and bystanders.

Methods of Instruction
Modeling, intensive drill, choral response, alpha-beta line, learning pairs and triads, Total Physical Response, role-playing, simulations, and situation cards.

Cross-Cultural Component
Provided to instructor upon request as transparency templates--2 hours. Emphasis is on demographics, body language, levels of language ability, Spanish surname system, Latino subsets, and differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanics.

Intended Audience
This program is intended for municipal police officers, sheriff's deputies, state police officers, federal agents, campus police officers, private sucurity guards, investigators, as well as criminal justice students. Audiences may be comprised of any combination of the above.

Length of Instruction
Short programs of 12-20 hours; longer programs of 20-45 hours.

Special Considerations
Before beginning instruction, we suggest that you consult CS headquarters for recommendations regarding cross-cultural material and language menus to be taught.
