Programs and Services to Small, Woman, and Minority Owned Businesses (SWAMs)

 

The Purpose of the Business Opportunity Center

  • Helping SWAMs expand their market to State and Local Governments (in collaboration with NOVA’s Purchasing Office).
    A hallmark of the Business Opportunity Center (BOC) is a small business Mentoring program. Some 20 local participating SWAMs will be mentored through a series of moderately prices workshops and seminars in a program focused on the state procurement process. Some of the topics to be offered are: Doing Business with the Commonwealth; Strategies for Building Relationships with Buyers; Tips on responding to IFB’s and RFPs; Strategies for Building Relationships with Buyers; Strategies for Maintaining Government Accounts; and Strategies for building Relationships with Prime Government Contractors.
    In addition, the BOC will assemble a cohort group of managers and consultants to individually counsel and guide the local SWAM participants through the state procurement process, thereby assuring a very high probability of SWAM- awarded state business.
  • Providing technical and professional development assistance through a network of economic service providers, state and local government agencies
  • Acquiring new business tools and knowledge through training workshops
  • Widening business networking opportunities

    Prime Vendor Seminar

    With Governor Kaine’s mandate to enhance opportunities for small, women and minority owned businesses; prime vendors are struggling to find qualified SWaMs. Come learn about the Supplier Diversity Program from Lockheed Martin, CSC, Fluor-Lane, LLC (and maybe CACI). Learn about their process to become a subcontractor and subcontracting opportunities.

    NOVA Buyer/Seller Information Exchange

    Local area vendors and contractors are invited to attend the Northern Virginia Community College Purchasing Office - Buyer/Seller Information Exchange sessions. The purpose of these sessions is to give area businesses the opportunity to meet the college's procurement staff, other regional procurement officers, and become familiar with the college, state, local municipalities procurement process.  These meetings open to all vendors and contractors to discuss the procurement processes, upcoming contracts and any questions or concerns.
