How Co-op Works

Students who are matriculated at other colleges and universities and want to enroll in co-op at NOVA must do the following.

Fax an unofficial transcript and their employer information (name of employer; name of the company where they will be working; company address; name of supervisor; supervisor's email, phone and fax numbers) to the Co-op Coordinator's attention at 703-323-3015.

Complete an application for admission and an application for in-state tuition rates (if they are VA residents); bring them along with a picture ID to an Office of Admission and Records at any one of the NOVA campuses. Application forms may be downloaded at http://www.nvcc.edu/admissions/forms.htm. The Co-op Coordinator cannot register any student for co-op until the college has processed their application; she has received all their documentation and the co-op agreement has been signed by the student, employer and Co-op coordinator. Students should submit these applications at least 30 days before the beginning of the semester in which they intend to enroll.

Students submit transcripts, letter of eligibility from the International Student Office (if applicable), and completed academic advising sheet (which lists all the courses they have completed to date in their program) to the Co-op Office to determine eligibility for co-op. Students must submit this information each semester they want to apply for co-op, as their eligibility status may change (Students who are matriculated in Business Management, Marketing, Real Estate and Business Administration programs at the Annandale Campus must first meet with their advisors). Students may only register for co-ops during an academic semester.

Students must allow up to a maximum of 2 weeks to write their behavioral objectives. They should submit them to the Co-op coordinator who will review them and may return them to the student for revisions; the student will make revisions and submit them to the Co-op coordinator.  Once the coordinator has approved the objectives, she will include them with the packet  of information that will be sent to the employer and will ask the employer to review them with the student; make any final adjustments and send them to the co-op coordinator.

Students have to make an appointment with their academic advisor and ask the advisor to note on their academic advising how their co-op will apply to their program of study.

The Co-op Coordinator and a faculty member determine if the position is directly related to their major if it is related she will send the employer a co op agreement. Employers will complete the agreement and sign it.

Students will be asked to sign the agreement.

The Co- op Coordinator will register students for the co-op course.

If students are an F-1 student, the op coordinator will notify Mr. Bennett, the International Student Advisor, that students are registered for a particular number of co- op hours and also provide him with all the employer information. Students will then be asked to bring their I- 20 to him for his signature. Only after Mr. Bennett has signed the I-20 may students begin to work.

The coordinator will provide students with the name of their professor.

Students will be required complete the assignments which will be posted on the Co-op Website.

The op coordinator will send performance evaluation forms to the employer and students. Employers and students will complete a preliminary evaluation of the internship and the students' performance. Employers will complete the final evaluation of students at the end of the internship, which will be forwarded to the faculty member and incorporated into the students' grades. Students will be asked to complete an evaluation of the internship opportunity and will be asked to send this evaluation to the co-op coordinator.
