The Registration Process for Co-op Students

Students can only obtain credit for an internship if they meet the co-op requirements and register for a co-op course during one of NOVA’s sixteen or eight week sessions in the fall and spring semesters or they enroll in a twelve or six week session during the summer.

All co-op courses are given the course number 297. The course prefix of the co-op course will be determined by the area of the internship. For example, all internships in the area of information technology will be given the course prefix ITE; all co-ops in the area of journalism or communications will be given the prefix SPD; political science internships will be given the prefix PLS. Since the course description in the catalog pertains to all disciplines it is intentionally vague. Therefore, students are encouraged to keep all assignments as documentation of their accomplishments during their internships.

Students need to provide the coordinator with the name and address of the company, contact person, and his/her phone number and email address.

The company will need to send the co-op coordinator a description of the job responsibilities involved in the internship. The co-op coordinator will review the description and determine if the internship is related to the student’s degree program.

The coordinator will send the employer an agreement to complete and the employer, student and coordinator will sign the agreement. The coordinator will then register the student for the number of credit hours that correspond to the number of hours that they are working. Students cannot register for this course themselves. The coordinator will give the student the name of the instructor who will be overseeing his or her co-op.

Students should will be asked to complete co-op assignments that will be posted to this website and meet with their assigned instructor.

The coordinator will give them the co-op instructor’s name and the student should contact him or her and begin the co-op class assignments.
