This information sheet is only meant to serve as an abbreviated explanation of how
credits earned through the Walt Disney World College Program may be applied toward NOVA
degrees. It is the students' responsibility to consult the Disney College Program website
at http://wdwcollegeprogram.com if they want
to apply for the program or if they have already been accepted into the program and are
seeking more information.
Two Ways Students Can Earn College Credit through
the Walt Disney College Program
1. Students may complete any of the five ACE (American Council on Education) accredited
college courses listed below.
- Disney Communications Course
- Disney Experiential Learning for the 21st Century
- Disney Hospitality Management Course
- Disney Human Resource Management Course
- Disney Organizational Leadership Course
2. Students can complete an internship for co-op credit, if the job description of the
internship meets the college's guidelines for academic credit (internships may also be
completed without having to earn academic credit).
How Walt Disney College Program ACE Accredited
Courses may apply toward NOVA Degrees:
ACE Accredited College Courses:
Before students enroll in any ACE courses they should first meet with their faculty
advisors to determine how or if these courses may apply to their degree programs at NOVA.
If students want these ACE courses to substitute for any NOVA courses they will have to
complete a course substitution form, attach the ACE course description and syllabi (See
instructions below on how to access this from the Disney site) and give these documents
to their faculty advisor for the dean's review. Course substitution forms may be obtained
at the students' academic division office. If students want to transfer from NOVA to a
four- year college they should consult that college's policy about the transfer of ACE
courses.
Internships:
Students may participate in Walt Disney World internships as a non-credit or credit
activity.
Non-Credit Internship:
Students should complete the Walt Disney enrollment verification form and submit it to
the Office of Admissions and Records who will complete it and mail it to the student. It
is the students' responsibility to consult the Walt Disney website (http://wdwcollege program.com/) for any other
policies and procedures they must follow in order to participate in a non-credit
internship.
Internship for Co-op Credit:
If students want to be awarded co-op credit, they must meet the eligibility requirements
for the Co-op Program (http://www.nvcc.edu/annandale/business/coop/eligibility.htm)
and submit all of the materials that are listed on the NOVA Co-op Website under the link
"Materials Students Must Submit" (http://www.nvcc.edu/annandale/business/coop/submit.htm).
The co-op coordinator will contact the employer at Disney and review job descriptions on
a case-by-case basis. If the internship meets the college's requirements for college
credit, students may receive co-op credit for their internship. Please note that students
should notify the co-op coordinator of their intention to complete a credit bearing
internship at least 4 weeks before the last day of classes. All students who are
participating in the Walt Disney College Program will need to complete an enrollment
verification form that will be included in a packet of materials from Walt Disney.
Students may bring this form to the Admissions and Records Office at their campus where
they will process it and mail it to the student. It is the responsibility of the student
to give a copy of this form to the co-op coordinator.
How to Access Information about ACE accredited
course descriptions and syllabi: Access the main
Walt Disney World College Program web page at http://wdwcollegeprogram.com - click on the word
"students" at the top of the screen
From the "quick links" drop down menu on the right side of the menu select the "get
credit" option - click on the "course listings" option to the right to access course
descriptions and syllabi
* Students should include copies of course descriptions and syllabi with the course
substitution form that they will give to their faculty advisor.
Advice about how to Manage an Internship and Taking
Classes: Students are strongly encouraged to
either enroll in a maximum of six credits (2 courses) or a co-op for credit (depending
upon the approval of the co-op coordinator). However, they should NOT enroll in both
types of academic courses. Internships require a work commitment of 40 hours a week and
it is doubtful that students will have enough time outside of their internship to
successfully complete co-op assignments and homework for two courses.
Time management skills and the ability to take responsibility for your own actions are
vital for your success in this program. For many students this internship may be the
first time they have lived away from home for any significant period of time without
parental supervision. Students should be expected to embrace the following
opportunities:
- live and work with a diverse group of people
- learn how to share the responsibilities involved in living with a group of
roommates
- manage their internship responsibilities (dress appropriately, arrive at work on
time, and always be willing to learn and improve their job performance)
- a lot enough time to complete academic assignments
- manage their time wisely so they can make the most of their Disney experience
