SDV 100: Orientation (1 cr.)

Assists students to make a successful transition to college. Provides students with the academic tools for success and teaches the skills of self-management and self-responsibility that relate to being a successful student. Helps students learn how to make responsible choices about their academic, personal and career goals. Provides information about the College and community resources, the College's policies and procedures and the processes of moving effectively through the educational system.

Strongly recommended for beginning students; first-time College students are required to take SDV 100 or another SDV course before enrolling for their 16th semester hour at the College.

A number of special emphasis  SDV 100's are also available including: 

Adult Students:
Focus is on success strategies for adult students returning to school.

Critical Thinking:
Emphasizes study skills and critical thinking skills essential for college success.

Independent Study:
After one class meeting, remaining assignments are completed on a self-paced basis on topics such as life planning, study skills, time management, etc..

International Students:
Designed for English As A Second Language students enrolled in level II or above.

Students with Disabilities:
Designed for students with a disabling condition. Topics include how to utilize college and community resources, how to request and receive accommodations, self- advocacy techniques and other topics usually included in SDV 100.

Technology:
Focuses on resources found in the Annandale Campus LRC including the Reading, Language, Math, Computer, Tutoring, Writing and Testing Centers and  the Library.

Web-Based:
After one class meeting, remaining assignments are web-based.  Students must have access to a computer, the World Wide Web and  their NOVA student email accounts.

 
 
SDV 106: Preparation for Employment (1 cr.)
Provides experience in resume writing, preparation of applications, letters of application and successfully preparing for and completing the job interview. Assists students in identifying their marketable skills and aptitudes. Develops strategies for successful employment search. Assists students in understanding effective human relations techniques and communication skills in job search.
 
 
SDV 107: Career Education (2 cr.)
Surveys career options available to students. Stresses career development and assists in the understanding of self in the world of work. Assists students in applying decision-making to career choice.
 
 
SDV 195: Topics In - Financing Education (1 cr.)
Explores the various procedures and resources to financing a college education. College budgeting, financial aid resources and scholarship searches will be studied in depth. Students will become acquainted with college resources, academic planning and college policies. Students will complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
 
 
SDV 295: Topics - Beyond Diversity: Building Communities (1 cr.)
This course is designed to encourage students to think critically about the issues involved with diversity and to assist students with recognizing that each of us lives within a diverse environment. While diversity encompasses a wide range of topics, this course will focus upon: Student Success Skills; Our Changing Cultural Landscape; Diversity Skills and Success; Personal and Social Barriers to Success; Developing Diversity Consciousness; Communicating in a Diverse World; Teamwork/Workforce Diversity; Age, Disabilities and Gender Issues.
 
 
SDV 295: Topics - Student Success (1 cr.)
Designed for students who are experiencing academic difficulty. Emphasis is on improved study skills and effective time management strategies.
 
 
SDV 295: Topics - Transfer Planning (1 cr.)
This course is designed to prepare each student for transfer to a four-year college or university. Topics include: conducting research on schools, college applications, application essays, interviews and financial aid.
